Mendoza 21.1.2008
OLE!
Bis bald
Rio de Janeiro 18.01.08 Leaving the island turned out to be intereting. The owner of the pousada told us that we would be able to catch a boat to Abroa (the main village on the island) no problem and the ferry leaves there every hour.......well it took about two hours before the boat taxi arrived. Which actualy was fortunate, as whilst we were waiting an Argentinian couple joined us and meant we didn´t have to pay the whole fare ourselves, and the guy gave us his number for when we get to Buenos Aires. We hd a good chat with them, well there was plenty of time, he is a massive football fan (curiously not that big a fan of Maradona until discussing English football) and will try and arrange for us to go and see a game whilst we are there. Once we arrived at the port to catch the freey to the mainland, we discovered that the ferry doesn´t run every hour. In fact it runs three times a day, fortuntely we hadnt mised the last one but again we had to hang around for a couple of hours. When we eventually made it back to the mainland we decided to stay a night there before heading down to Rio. Rio is a fabulous city and if you have money you really can do anything here, however, it does have it´s probems with the slums and people on the streets. We are staying in Ipamena, just next to Copacabana, the beach is very nice but packed with people - most of which are bronzed and toned with very little covering them! Yesterdy we took the bus to Corcovado to see the statue of Christ the Redeemer. It was very busy but it´s a sight you have to see, the statue itself is stagering but the view was just as breathtaking. We tried to get there early but the public transport system was not as quick as we thought and there were many a tourist there too. One way to have done it would have been by helicopter (they are constantly flying around here) however that was a little out of our budget! We have one more night here (Bini, Ian, Stephan and Angela arriv later too) and then tomorrow we fly back to Chile and then head down to Argentina. We are now half way through our trip and even after having to do mundane things such as washing today I´m still excited about the other half! :-) xxx Ihla Grande 14.01.08 On the 9th we all left Stephen and Angela´s and headed off to Ilha Grande. Dario and I decided to go to Ouro Puerto on the way. First however, we had to get to the main bus station. Sylvia came and spoke to the local bus driver and asked him to drop us off as close as possible. The driver was an absolute star and took us all the way there in his bus! We spent the whole day walking around the old beautiful colonial town. Ouro Puerto has many churches, most of which were closed, but we did go into the most "opulent" church (according to our lonely planet) Matriz de ns do Pilar and it really was covered in gold! We spent a little time in the local market (Dario was thrilled to be dragged around another market of tat!), before taking the overnight bus to Rio and then on to Angra de Reis. Our plan was to cross over to the island and go camping for a few days, but after going into to two tourist information we were told we couldn´t camp where we wanted to go. Fortunately, Ian managed to sort us out a little place three beaches down from their pousada. It was a bit of a mission to get here as the boat we were supposed to take was full and we had to be brought to the bay by a fishing boat. We had to clamber across two other boats to get to ours (interesting considering the huge rucksacks we have on our backs), we then visited a floating petrol station before chugging our way across. The fisherman (who seemed to understand things at the port) had no idea where we wanted to go or what we were trying to say. After lots of hand pointing and phone calls to Ian we made it. Once he saw where we were (not where we were actually going to be staying) the price increased as his level of understanding decreased even more! After a cold drink or two we headed off to our place. Dario and Ian with the big rucksacks and Bini and I with the little ones. We were told it would be about 20 minutes to get there, after about 40 (and asking for directions) we realised we had clearly gone too far and had to trundle about half the way back until we found some-one who could tell us where the place is. We are staying in Praya Camirangha which is a beautiful cove with a few pousadas, private houses and the local village. There are also lots of rich people coming to the beaches in their private boats. Most days we have just been chilling with the others at the beach then spending the evening on their jetty with a few drinks. It certainly is interesting walking back to ours afterwards. It´s a good job Dario is prepared with a torch or we would never make it as there are very few lights, it is pitch black and we have obstacles such as rocks and tree roots to get over. I learnt the hard way the other night that you should wear shoes at night. We were half way back and I felt like there was something on my feet, when we shone the torch down my feet were covered in big black ants! Needless to say I moved at great speed through that area jumping and jiggling my feet to stop the ants crawling all over them. What fun! Last night we went into the main village by boat to buy a few things and have dinner, fortunatley we had a private taxi as we were a tad late returning to the pier (even with a Swiss and two half Germans in the group)! We were supposed to leave today but decided last night to stay till tomorrow. The owner however, has gone to the main land and won´t be returning till late this evening, hopefully she won´t be bringing more people here or we may end up sleeping in the hammocks or on the beach. (Which I guess wouldn´t be too bad as that is what we´ve been doing all day today anyway, it´s so tiring relaxing on the beach in the heat ;-) ). As it´s getting cooler we are now going to drag ourselves out of our hammocks in the shade and go to the beach for a swim. xxx Belo Horizonte 05.01.08 Happy New Year!! We did manage to make it to Curitiba for a night. Curitiba was very nice and had lots of little markets where we tried some fruits and managed to ask questions as there was a guy who spoke German. It was very relaxing wondering around their pedestrianised area, they are very proud of there town here in Curitiba!, and proudly taken to their prk and zoo. It actually was a little area with a few birds and insects oh yes and a monkey!Bless We took the over night bus to Belo and there was a lot of confusion as we were given the wrong time of arrival! However, we got there and Ben and Mariana picked us up and took us to her Auntie´s farmhouse. Lots of her family were there and we spent a few days sitting around the pool, drinking and eating. Mariana´s family were lovely and we managed to communicate with hand gestures and translation help of those whom spoke English. On the 31st 150 people came to celebrate, the party was fantastic. From about 9pm the drinks and food flowed and the band played (at about 6am they had to ask the band to stop)! Aprt from stopping to watch the fireworks I was held captive on the dance floor as the Brazilian tried to teach me to dance. After a couple of hours of sleep we left the farm and went into the city where spent a night at a cousin´s house before heading out of town again to Stephen´s house. There are a lot of us staying at Stephen and Angelas (us two, Bini, Ian, Vivica , Simon and Bella) and we have spent the last few days around the pool playing with the kids. On Friday evening we went to Ben and Mariana´s wedding which was beautiful. The ceremony started around 8.30pm (as it´s too hot to have it during the day), and the whole thing was in the same place. It was a Brazilian wedding but the priest said some things in English so Ben´s family and friends could understand. Once the ceremony had finished the party really started. It was really good that we spent some time with her family so we knew a lot of people and once again they tried to teach me to dance! One of the favours they gave the girls were a pair of flip-flops (with Ben, Mariana and the date on them-original yet practical) which made dancing a lot easier and a lot more comfortable! Once again there was a constant flow of food and drink, the Brazilians sure no how to party! My waistline has been constantly under attack since we arrived and after a another night out and a children´s party it is still expanding! Louisa (Bini´s niece) had her 3rd birthday yesterday, which was great fun. Unfortunately, the weather has changed and the clouds and mist have rolled in. However, we are still managing to sit outside - just with jumpers instead of bikinis! We are going to head into Belo Horizonte town later (which is approximately 30 minutes away from their house up in the mountains) for a look around and dinner. xxx
GUATS NEUS! HAPPY NEW YEAR! FELIZ ANNO NOVO!
